The International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) is a not-for-profit organization representing the global fertilizer industry. IFA has more than 450 members in some 80 countries. About half of the membership is based in developing countries. IFA member companies represent all the activities related to the production and distribution of every type of fertilizer, their raw materials and intermediates. IFA's membership also includes organizations involved in agronomic research and training with regard to fertilizers.

IFA assembles and distributes information on the production, trade and consumption of fertilizers, their intermediates and raw materials, by means of :

  • progress in production technology,
  • the agricultural situation and world fertilizer supply and demand,
  • the application and use of fertilizers, including agronomic practices and statistics on application,
  • questions of general interest, such as environment and safety.

IFA is the international voice of the global fertilizer industry. IFA promotes the viewpoint of the industry and defends the general interest of its members. The Association's mission includes the promotion of the efficient and responsible use of plant nutrients to maintain and increase agricultural production across the globe in a sustainable manner.

IFA has consultative status with various agencies of the United Nations (UN), including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Association also cooperates actively with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the

IFA organizes a number of conferences and meetings for members every year. The annual Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific and periodic Agriculture Conferences are open to non-members.

On behalf of the industry, IFA cooperates with a number of partners to promote the efficient and responsible use of fertilizers.

The IFA International Award is offered every year for research which has led to a significant advance in the efficiency of fertilizer use, and which has been communicated successfully to the farmer in the form of practical recommendations.

The award alternates each year between research related to conditions in developed and developing countries. Candidates are nominated by IFA members.
